SITHP Recognizes World Tourism Day 2026

Solomon Islands joins the global community in celebrating World Tourism Day and the important role tourism can play in creating jobs, supporting local businesses and driving long term economic growth.

With its world-class diving and surfing to picturesque islands and beaches, rich and vibrant culture, and significant World War II heritage, Solomon Islands has significant potential to grow its tourism economy. Realizing this potential, however, requires addressing some of the long-standing barriers that make tourism investment difficult, particularly secure access to land.

Through the Accessing Land for Tourism Investment Facilitation (ALTIF) project, the MCC-Solomon Islands Threshold Program (SITHP) is working in partnership with the Solomon Islands Government to create clearer pathways for responsible tourism investment.

Over the past year, this work has continued to move from planning into action. SITHP is supporting government to identify sites with tourism investment potential; strengthening processes around land titles and access; addressing regulatory barriers; and, improving coordination between government agencies to directly address tourism development.

ALTIF is also putting its social licensing approach into practice, including on Nafinua Island in East Makira, where the program is working with communities to establish clearer expectations around tourism activities, supporting local communities to prepare for and benefit from future tourism opportunities.

While much of this work happens behind the scenes, it is fundamental to creating an environment where responsible tourism investment can occur.

This World Tourism Day, SITHP recognizes the continued efforts of the Solomon Islands Government, communities and tourism sector to unlock the country’s tourism potential and create lasting economic opportunities for Solomon Islanders.
